Job outlook for guy with an A.A.S. in Information Systems w/ Network Specialty?

by admin on May 11, 2010

I will soon be getting my Associate’s degree in Computer Information Systems. My specialty is Networking (Windows based) as well as Database Management (mostly SQL and Access). What is the job market like for IT people these days, and what about realistic beginning pay? Any pointers or tips? Would I be smarter to try for a job in Networking or a job as a DBA?

I have been in the industry a long time and without hesitation I can tell you to lean towards the DB side. Learm something other than SQL (like Oracle). The market is flooded with Microsoft engineers. If you LIKE the networking side better then get an entry level position somewhere where they will PAY for you to get Cisco certified.

Networking usually also incorporates desktop support. Certification in anything puts you in the lead. I have Novel CNE.
